Global Gemini Outage Leaves Users Unable to Access the Service
Google confirmed today (Wednesday) that its Gemini artificial intelligence service is suffering from a widespread outage affecting users around the world. Since the early morning hours in the United States, reports have been piling up that the chatbot is not responding to requests, is displaying error messages, or is stopping altogether. Many users said that when they tried to launch the service, they encountered error messages such as Error 1076 and Error 1099, along with the general message, "Something went wrong." ● Apple wants AI to run on your iPhone, not just in the cloud ● An Nvidia executive: "Thanks to Mellanox, we are the largest communications company in the world"
At the same time, the outage monitoring site Downdetector recorded a sharp surge in reports of problems, with more than 1,600 reports within a few hours. The graph published on the site shows that for most of the day there were hardly any issues, but starting in the overnight hours in the United States, the number of complaints rose sharply, indicating a broad outage rather than a localized problem affecting only a few users. According to reports, the outage is affecting Gemini across a range of platforms, including the web version, Android and iPhone devices, the Chrome browser, and Mac computers. Google updated users that the incident is related to Gemini service within Google Workspace, the applications suite that includes Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive. The company also updated its official status page to say it is aware of the problem and working to fix it, and later said that a solution had been identified and was being rolled out to users. However, Google has not yet provided an estimate for when the service will be fully restored.
The outage comes at a time when Google is investing heavily in expanding Gemini’s use and integrating it into its search engine, enterprise applications suite and cloud products, as part of the competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other players in the artificial intelligence market. At this stage, the company is still investigating the source of the outage and has not said how many users were actually affected.
