SpaceX Rocket Stage Crashes Into Moon Creating 18-Meter Crater
A part of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, roughly the size of a school bus and weighing about four tons, crashed into the Moon on August 5, 2026, at a speed of approximately 8,690 kilometers per hour. This rocket stage had been drifting uncontrollably in space since its launch in January 2025, when it delivered a lunar lander for Firefly Aerospace. The impact occurred in the Einstein crater on the Moon's western edge, a region difficult to observe from Earth.
NASA estimates the collision created a crater about 18 meters wide and four meters deep, ejecting dust and rocks. The impact was unplanned, according to SpaceX. Although the dust cloud was illuminated by sunlight, it was not visible to the naked eye from Earth. No direct footage of the crash exists, as no lunar orbiters were positioned to capture the moment. Scientists plan to compare before-and-after images to identify the new crater, a process that may take time. The South Korean lunar orbiter Danuri passed near the site shortly before the impact but has not yet released any footage.
Astronomers only recently confirmed the rocket stage's trajectory would lead to a lunar collision. NASA's Juliana Shayman and SpaceX's Dragon program noted solar activity and gravitational forces altered its path. Astronomer Bill Gray described the event as having "probably minor" scientific importance but valuable for studying uncontrolled space debris. Such debris typically burns up in Earth's atmosphere or falls into oceans, but this stage remained in space due to the high velocity needed for the lunar mission.
Space debris impacts on the Moon are rare but not unprecedented. In 2022, a Chinese rocket stage crashed after a lunar test mission, and NASA intentionally crashed a rocket stage in 2009 to study ejecta clouds. Several lunar landers, including Russia's Luna-25, India's Chandrayaan-2, and Israel's Beresheet, have also crashed in recent years. NASA and SpaceX are discussing ways to prevent similar incidents in the future, hoping data from this event will improve tracking and understanding of artificial impacts on the Moon.
