Morocco Sends Troops to Gaza for First Arab Military Deployment Amid Regional Tensions

Amid the evolving security situation in Gaza, Morocco has become the first Arab and African country to deploy military forces to the region as part of the International Stabilization Force (ISF). This deployment, formalized on July 1, involves around 200 Moroccan soldiers stationed in Rafah, down from an initially planned 500. The ISF was established under Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza's future, and the Moroccan contingent is expected to operate in cooperation with the Israeli military, signaling a deepening operational relationship beyond diplomatic ties. Morocco's National Defense Director emphasized the country's commitment to peace, international cooperation, and regional stability through this contribution.

Professor Said Sadiki from the University of Fez explained that Morocco's involvement allows it to renew its diplomatic engagement with the Palestinian issue, although the current regional climate limits active mediation roles for Arab states. The Moroccan public, however, largely opposes normalization with Israel, with 89% against recognition according to a recent poll, and local activists sharply criticizing the military deployment. Morocco remains unique among Arab nations in sending troops to the ISF, while Egypt has limited its role to logistical and training support.

Separately, in the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia is forming a naval coalition to break the Houthi blockade, involving 14 countries including Egypt, Turkey, and Pakistan, but notably excluding the UAE and Oman due to regional disputes and other priorities.
