Haredi Recruitment Activist Attacked by Jerusalem Faction Describes Harrowing Ordeal

Rafi Perlstein, a Haredi recruitment activist, recounted his frightening experience after being attacked by members of the Jerusalem Faction on the day following a Haredi IDF recruitment event. The incident occurred after the event ended, when dozens of protesters surrounded the building. Perlstein stayed behind for a personal meeting and was soon trapped inside as protesters recognized him and began calling his name.

Police arrived and escorted Perlstein outside with a security detail, but he was met with insults, death threats, and physical aggression including attempts to steal his computer and the removal of his kippah. A taxi driver with a special needs child was also detained by police and forced to drive, but protesters surrounded the vehicle, preventing it from leaving. For 22 minutes, Perlstein and his companion endured attacks while police forces mysteriously disappeared from the scene.

During the ordeal, protesters tried to bribe the taxi driver to release Perlstein, who was protected by the driver’s body as the child cried. Eventually, two female officers arrived but were unable to control the situation until several civilians intervened to disperse the protesters. Perlstein condemned the violence, emphasizing that while protest and debate are legitimate, physical assault, property damage, and intimidation of vulnerable individuals are unacceptable and do not honor religious values.

The attack highlights growing tensions and violent confrontations within the Haredi community, particularly regarding military conscription and Sabbath observance, raising concerns about leadership losing control over extremist elements.
