Greek media call for lengthy ban after Jones-Nunn clash in title decider
Greek basketball media focused on a violent postgame incident after Olympiacos beat Panathinaikos 89-85 on Saturday in Game 5 of the championship final series. Despite the high-level basketball, the decisive match in Greece was overshadowed by the confrontation between Panathinaikos guard Kendrick Nunn and Olympiacos forward Tyler Jones.
Late in the third quarter, the two players got into a fight and were both ejected. The dispute then escalated further, and Jones was caught on video punching Nunn in the face. Panathinaikos coach Ergin Ataman said after the game, “Jones simply punched Nunn in the face. A very serious incident. I do not understand what happened to the Greek league.”
A new leaked video from the episode reportedly showed security personnel and a large police presence in the locker room area next to players from both teams, apparently in response to the altercation. Greek fans reacted with shock on social media, with one post saying, “Unbelievable, things that should not be seen on basketball courts. Jones should be suspended for at least a year.”
Separately, Greek outlet Sport24 reported that Nunn was taken to hospital after the game, apparently not because of the clash with Jones. The guard has a fractured rib and is due to undergo further examinations. The incident has intensified scrutiny of the Greek league after a championship game that ended with Olympiacos winning the title.
