Likud Member Challenges Party Court Ruling Over Conflict of Interest Allegations

A recent ruling by the Likud party's internal court has sparked controversy and a legal challenge over alleged conflict of interest. The court decision, issued late Tuesday night, disqualified certain candidates from running in regional slots, including a clause barring current Knesset members, ministers, and deputy ministers from contesting district seats. This ruling potentially benefits Shimon Boker, who is running in the Negev district.

MK Afif Abed, the Druze representative on the Likud list, announced he will petition the district court today, claiming the ruling was compromised because one of the judges, Rafi Boker, is the brother of candidate Shimon Boker. Abed criticized the decision, stating, "How can this be democracy? A judge who is the brother of a candidate rules in a way that helps his sibling. This is a clear conflict of interest."

Abed also plans to challenge other aspects of the ruling, including statements made by judge Michael Kleiner, who publicly expressed opposition to ideas under consideration in the vote. Abed questioned how a judge could participate in a hearing with a predetermined opinion. The dispute highlights internal tensions within Likud and raises questions about the fairness of the party's candidate selection process.
