Gadi Eizenkot Urges Police Chief to Act Immediately Against Political Violence After Attack on Party Activist

Gadi Eizenkot, chairman of the Yisrael party, has called on Israel Police Commissioner Major General Dany Levi to conduct a swift and thorough investigation into the assault on Ilan Mens, a 76-year-old party activist and head of Yisrael's Mevaseret Zion branch. Mens was attacked last week while attempting to remove a sign calling for the release of Yigal Amir, the assassin of former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. The attack left Mens hospitalized with a brain hemorrhage at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, where he recently underwent a procedure to drain blood from his head. His condition remains serious as medical staff await CT scan results.

In a letter to Commissioner Levi, Eizenkot emphasized that such violence, occurring just 84 days before the elections, is a grave warning sign and must not be tolerated. He stressed the importance of sending a clear message that criminal and violent behavior during this sensitive period is unacceptable. Eizenkot demanded that the police promptly arrest those responsible and fully pursue legal proceedings.

Activists had placed the controversial sign on the Hemed Interchange bridge near Jerusalem in recent weeks, sparking tensions. The police have launched an investigation, with the lead investigator maintaining close contact with Mens's legal representative, attorney Yoni Nosbaum. Mens's associates expressed hope that the investigation will be exhaustive and that arrests will be made soon.
