Netanyahu Presses Former Minister Ron Dermer to Join Likud List for Upcoming Elections

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues efforts to persuade former Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer to return to political life and join the Likud party list for the next Knesset elections. Despite Netanyahu's pressure, Dermer currently shows little interest in re-entering public service, and political analysts assess his chances of agreeing as slim.

Dermer, once one of Netanyahu's closest and most influential aides, resigned from the government in November 2025 after serving as minister responsible for sensitive diplomatic negotiations. Since leaving office, he has moved to the private sector but maintained contact with the Prime Minister's Office. Political sources describe him as being "called up for reserves" whenever significant diplomatic needs arise. For example, last week he participated in preparatory meetings for Netanyahu's upcoming meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, mainly assisting with coordination on American relations.

In his resignation letter last November, Dermer cited personal reasons, explaining he had promised his family to serve only two years in the role and had extended his term twice due to security circumstances. He highlighted the government's legacy tied to the October 7 attack and the ensuing two-year war on multiple fronts. Dermer expressed gratitude to Netanyahu for the opportunity to serve closely and handle critical national issues during a pivotal time for Israel.
