Satellite Images Reveal Extensive Destruction in Southern Lebanon Villages

Exclusive satellite imagery analyzed by N12 reveals widespread destruction across southern Lebanon, particularly in villages near the Israeli border. The analysis, conducted by Adi Ben Nun from the Hebrew University’s GIS center using Planet Labs data, shows that approximately 74% of buildings in 19 examined villages were destroyed, totaling around 18,000 structures. Destruction was most severe in five villages, Marwahin, Mahbib, Maroun al-Ras, Bileida, and Adeisa, where 99% or more of buildings were demolished.

The damage is concentrated closer to the border area, with the destruction rate decreasing in villages further inland. The satellite images indicate that much of the damage occurred during the current conflict with Hezbollah, though some villages also suffered damage in the previous 2024 Lebanon fighting round. Defense Minister Yoav Katz stated last week that 24 Lebanese villages, historically hostile and used by Hezbollah to threaten Israeli borders, were systematically destroyed, with 15,000 to 20,000 homes demolished.

The images provide a stark visual confirmation of the scale of destruction in southern Lebanon, highlighting the impact of Israel’s military operations targeting Hezbollah strongholds near the border. The findings underscore the extensive damage to civilian infrastructure in the region amid ongoing hostilities.
