Political Clash Delays Northern Israel Defense Budget Amid Coalition-Opposition Dispute

A fierce political dispute erupted between Israel's coalition and opposition over the convening of the Finance Committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday, which was unusually approved during the Knesset recess by the parliament's legal advisor, Attorney Shagit Afik. The coalition accuses the opposition of blocking the transfer of nearly one billion shekels intended for the defense of northern settlements near the Lebanon border. Conversely, the opposition insists that the coalition itself decided to advance only coalition-related budget items, excluding the northern defense budget from the agenda.

Attorney Afik authorized the special Finance Committee session to approve about 500 million shekels in coalition budget allocations, including 270 million for ultra-Orthodox education, 124 million for Minister Orit Strook's office, and approximately 120 million for religious services. This decision followed a previous committee meeting that ended without votes due to a dispute between Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and ultra-Orthodox parties.

The core of the conflict is not the northern defense budget itself but the procedure for its approval. The coalition claims that without opposition approval in the Arrangements Committee, the defense budget cannot be brought to the Finance Committee. The opposition counters that since Afik approved the committee's convening during recess, the defense budget could have been included but was deliberately excluded by the coalition, which prioritized coalition budget items instead.

Opposition leader Merav Ben Ari stated she opposed convening the committee but criticized the coalition for choosing which budget requests to advance, questioning why the northern defense budget was sidelined in favor of coalition priorities. As a result, the Finance Committee is expected to discuss only the coalition budget items tomorrow, while the nearly one billion shekel northern defense budget remains off the agenda. Both sides blame each other for the impasse, deepening the political struggle over budget priorities affecting northern Israeli communities.
