3-Year-Old Dies After Contracting Dangerous Meningococcal Infection
A 3-year-old boy died on Saturday morning at Ichilov Medical Center after contracting a virulent bacterium. According to the hospital, he arrived at the emergency department in septic shock with a clinical suspicion of meningococcemia, a severe bloodstream infection.
Despite the medical team’s efforts and repeated resuscitation attempts, doctors were unable to save him and pronounced him dead. The hospital said the case involved meningococcus, also known as Neisseria meningitidis, a bacterium that can cause meningitis and serious blood infection.
Ichilov added that there is a vaccine against meningococcus B, which is recommended by the Pediatric Association. In a statement, the hospital urged the public to vaccinate infants and toddlers, saying this can save lives.
The infection is relatively rare, but it can progress very rapidly and become life-threatening within hours.
