Indictment Filed in Shfaram Mosque Shooting; Motive Ruled Criminal, Not Nationalistic

The Haifa District Prosecutor's Office is set to file an indictment this week against Abed Azam for the attempted murder of a sheikh at a mosque in Shfaram. An additional indictment will be filed against Azam's associate for involvement in the incident, specifically for allegedly concealing the firearm used in the shooting. Both suspects, aged 32 and 47, were detained and their arrests extended multiple times during the investigation.

The probe, conducted by the Northern District Police and the Shin Bet, initially treated the shooting as a potential terror attack, prompting a large-scale manhunt involving police, Border Police, Shin Bet, and special forces. However, the investigation ultimately determined that the motive was criminal rather than nationalistic, stemming from a personal dispute between the suspects.

According to the findings, Azam arrived at the mosque last month, opened fire at the sheikh, and fled the scene. The extensive search in the Krayot and Galilee areas initially led to several arrests, but Azam evaded capture until later detained. Authorities had urged the public to remain vigilant and report sightings, warning that the suspect might be armed.

Azam's defense attorneys, Tammi Ulman and Shadi Saruji, stated that prosecutors pressured their client to confess to a security-related offense, which he denied. They emphasized that the suspect was held in prolonged isolation to coerce a confession and that the investigation confirmed the incident was purely criminal with no security or nationalistic background.
