Third Political Bloc Talks Collapse as Parties Prepare to Run Separately Ahead of Deadline

After weeks of negotiations, meetings, and attempts to form alliances to reduce the number of lists in the so-called "third bloc," efforts have stalled. Currently, each political group is operating independently, making a joint list increasingly unlikely. The main talks involved Benny Gantz, Dedi Simhi, Yuli Edelstein, and Ayelet Shaked, but disagreements, especially over leadership roles that could attract right-wing voters, prevented agreements. Gantz refuses to relinquish leadership.

Meanwhile, former minister Gilad Erdan is preparing to establish an independent political framework with Edelstein and is considering adding other figures. Ayelet Shaked remains cautious, keeping all options open and not rushing to join any group. Attempts to engage Yoaz Hendel and Hili Tropper also failed, as they plan to launch their own independent party campaign this week and are not in advanced talks with others.

Political analysts believe each player is currently focused on maximizing their strength ahead of final coalition negotiations, as larger public support translates into better positions in future alliances. However, there is a clear understanding that too many lists competing in the same political space could lead to some parties failing to enter the Knesset, wasting tens of thousands of votes.

With the candidate registration deadline set for September 7-8, time is running out. Significant changes could still occur, but the key question remains who will be the first to compromise and allow a merger, or whether ego battles will result in many candidates being excluded and valuable mandates lost.
