Cyberattack Targets US Water Systems in Seven States, Iran Suspected

A cyberattack has struck water systems across seven US states, with Minnesota and Michigan among the affected. The FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported last Thursday that these states notified the FBI of incidents involving water system controls, though no disruptions to water supply were detected. Authorities nationwide are preparing for potential malfunctions in computer systems that monitor water quality and chemical levels.

While the US investigation is in early stages and no definitive proof links Iran to the attack, officials consider Iran the primary suspect. That attack involved Iranian hackers infiltrating Israeli water pump software via American and European servers to conceal their origin.

President Donald Trump downplayed the severity of the incident and suggested Minnesota, whose governor Tim Walz is a political opponent, might be exaggerating. Walz rejected these claims, calling the attack an example of modern warfare. Federal sources privately confirmed Iran remains the main suspect but emphasized that cyber investigations can take months to conclude.

Local officials in Minnesota, including Braham's mayor, expressed strong confidence in Iran's involvement based on intelligence shared by state and federal agencies, though they remain cautious about public statements. The New York Times noted the attack does not appear financially motivated, reducing the likelihood of criminal intent.
