Navy Drill Off Eilat Coast Startles Beachgoers
An Israeli Navy vessel carried out live fire off the coast of Eilat on Saturday, and the sound was heard on nearby beaches, causing alarm among swimmers and other beachgoers. The shooting was not an unusual incident, according to the military, but part of a routine weapons check and a transfer between naval vessels.
The activity had been coordinated in advance with the relevant authorities, the Israel Defense Forces said. The IDF also said weather and sea conditions may have made the gunfire sound louder than usual, which likely contributed to the panic among people on the shore.
The military stressed that this was not an exceptional event and that there was no special security incident involved.
