Jewish Family Faces Antisemitic Attack at Montreal Park Playground

A Jewish family visiting La Fontaine Park in Montreal was subjected to an antisemitic outburst when a woman told them, "Jews aren’t allowed here," after the father asked her to remove her dogs from a children's playground where pets are prohibited. The incident, recorded and widely viewed on social media, began when the father pointed out a sign stating that dogs are banned from the playground and that violators face a 300 Canadian dollar fine. The woman responded with hostility, insulting the children and making antisemitic remarks. The father reported the incident to police, who have opened an investigation into potential hate speech but have not yet arrested the woman, identified as a local designer.

Montreal police spokesperson Florence Stafford confirmed the ongoing inquiry into whether a criminal offense occurred. The father expressed shock over the hateful comment but noted that such antisemitic incidents have become increasingly common in Canada, occurring daily according to him.

This event reflects a troubling rise in antisemitism across Canada in 2026. Data from B'nai Brith Canada shows 27 violent antisemitic incidents this year, more than double the 10 recorded in 2025. These include attacks such as shootings targeting Jewish institutions. Richard Robertson, the organization’s research director, stated that 2026 is on track to be the second most violent year after 2023, which saw 77 incidents following the Hamas terror attack on October 7 and the subsequent war. The current year’s figures already surpass those of 2022, 2024, and 2025 combined.
