Israel and US Consider Land Blockade to Intensify Pressure on Iran

Israel and the United States are reportedly exploring the possibility of imposing a land blockade on Iran to increase economic pressure on Tehran. This option was discussed during a meeting at the White House on Tuesday between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as part of broader efforts to curb Iran's regional activities and military capabilities. The blockade would involve closing or tightening control over Iran's land borders and key trade crossings, aiming to restrict the country's imports and exports.

A senior Israeli official told The Telegraph that a comprehensive land blockade could severely disrupt Iran's economy and military resupply. However, implementing such a blockade would be highly complex due to Iran's extensive land borders with seven countries, including Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. Cooperation from these neighboring states, some of which are not US or Israeli allies, would be essential but difficult to secure. The US may view Pakistan and Iraq as potential weak points for enforcement.

Retired US Lieutenant General Sean McFarland described a full land blockade as "almost impossible" but acknowledged that restricting Iran's trade could isolate it economically and force it to negotiate. The strategy would likely require a combination of military and diplomatic measures rather than relying solely on diplomatic pressure. The blockade could also hinder Iran's ability to rearm, as Tehran is expecting shipments of rocket launchers and air defense systems from China under a $70 million military cooperation deal.

The discussions reflect a shift in US policy, with Trump reportedly believing that the current approach, including efforts to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, has reached its limits. The land blockade concept fits within the "maximum pressure" campaign aimed at crippling Iran's economy and forcing it back to the negotiating table. Intelligence assessments indicate divisions within Iran's leadership between those fearing economic collapse and others favoring continued confrontation. Meanwhile, Iran faces severe fuel shortages, with long queues at gas stations due to diesel scarcity.

It remains uncertain whether the land blockade plan will be implemented, but its consideration signals an escalation in US and Israeli efforts to intensify pressure on Iran amid ongoing regional tensions.
