SpaceX Starship Achieves First Soft Ocean Landing, Eyes Orbital Flight Next
SpaceX celebrated a major milestone with its 13th Starship test flight, which successfully performed a soft landing on the Indian Ocean northwest of Australia. For the first time, the spacecraft remained afloat on the water without sinking or exploding, a significant improvement over previous missions. CEO Elon Musk shared footage five days post-landing, highlighting Starship's buoyancy. Following this success, Musk announced that if data analysis reveals no issues, the next flight could attempt a landing back on the launch pad, likely marking Starship's first orbital flight.
Preparations for the 14th test flight are underway, including checks of the next booster rocket, Super Heavy Booster 21, and Starship Ship 41. Experts estimate the launch could occur in late August or early September. Despite progress, challenges remain, particularly with the Super Heavy booster, which malfunctioned during the 13th flight's landing attempt, and the thermal protection system. Starship uses about 18,000 heat-resistant tiles and a stainless steel body to withstand reentry heat, but rapid turnaround reuse depends on improving tile durability and maintenance. Musk has identified heat shield inspection as the biggest hurdle to quick reusability.
In related space news, NASA astronaut Jessica Meir, daughter of a former Israeli, was named commander of the International Space Station's 75th mission, becoming the seventh woman to lead a station expedition. Meanwhile, NASA's Swift space telescope faces orbital decay, prompting a $30 million mission by the small company Katalyst to extend its life by docking a servicing spacecraft named Link. However, Link has encountered a reaction wheel malfunction causing uncontrolled spinning, threatening the mission's success.
Astronomers also reported a breakthrough in stellar research, capturing the clearest image yet of Betelgeuse's companion star using the Very Large Telescope. The companion is larger than previously thought, about three to four times the Sun's mass, while Betelgeuse itself is about 14 times more massive. This discovery sheds new light on the dynamics of this famous red supergiant star in Orion, which is expected to explode as a supernova within hundreds of thousands of years.
