Internal Dispute in Israeli Democrats Party Over West Bank Terminology and Terror Attack Response

During the discussion, Meretz candidate Gabi Leski criticized party leader Yair Golan for using the term "Judea and Samaria" and demanded he refer to the area as the "West Bank." Golan rejected the notion that "Judea and Samaria" is a right-wing term.

Arab sector representatives within the party, including candidates Soumaya Bashir and Aid Badir, also criticized Golan's initial response to the attack, which they said received significant backlash in the Arab community. Golan had described the incident as a terror attack rather than a "clash between settlers and Palestinians," a framing some party members viewed as adopting a settler narrative.

Golan's original tweet expressed condolences to the victim's family and called for a strong military response combined with a strategic initiative to dismantle terror infrastructure. Another party candidate, Moshe Redman, responded hours after the attack, criticizing media framing of the event according to settler narratives and highlighting the complexity of the incident, noting casualties on both Israeli and Palestinian sides. He questioned the logic of establishing settlements like Gilad Farm in predominantly Arab areas and called for clarity on who initiated the violence.

The Democrats party declined to comment on the closed-door discussions. The debate reflects internal divisions over terminology and political framing of security incidents in the West Bank ahead of upcoming elections.
