Israeli Hostage Avitar David Opens Up About Harrowing Hamas Captivity Experience

Avitar David, an Israeli who was held captive by Hamas in Gaza, has spoken publicly for the first time about his ordeal nearly nine months after his release. In an interview with the Israeli program "Uvda," David recounted the brutal conditions he endured alongside his childhood friend Guy Gilboa-Dalal, who was abducted with him during the same attack on October 7, 2023.

David described the moment of their capture during a party that turned into chaos as gunfire erupted nearby. Both were taken to a Hamas tunnel where they were held in harsh conditions, forbidden from speaking or even looking at each other for two weeks. They suffered severe starvation, with food and water rationed to the point of near collapse. David recalled being forced to dig what he believed was his own grave while hearing Hamas militants enjoying tea and cake nearby.

The captors eventually separated David and Gilboa-Dalal, causing intense emotional distress. Despite the trauma, David emphasized his will to live, saying, "People think captivity is death, but there you want to live even more." He also revealed ongoing psychological struggles, including nightmares and trauma, and has sought clinical help to recover.

The interview sheds light on the physical and mental toll of captivity, the bond between the two friends, and the long road to healing after their release. David’s story highlights the human cost of the conflict and the resilience of those who survive such experiences.
