Israeli Bar Association Demands Criminal Probe Into Channel 14 Over Judge Defamation

The head of the Israeli Bar Association, Attorney Amit Bechar, has formally requested a criminal investigation into Channel 14 and its hosts, Yinon Magal and Yotam Zamri, following defamatory remarks made against Judge Oren Silverman. The demand was sent to the Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and State Prosecutor Amit Isman on July 30, 2026, after a broadcast of the program "The Patriots" that aired following the dismissal of a defamation lawsuit by MK Simcha Rothman against Channel 12 and Guy Peleg.

Bechar's letter accused the hosts of a "blatant and severe attempt to intimidate" the judiciary, citing statements such as Magal calling Judge Silverman a "stupid judge," "either stupid or utterly wicked," and "part of the junta." Zamri reportedly joined in, labeling the judge "wicked and a liar" and accusing the court of colluding with Channel 12. Bechar warned these comments could constitute public servant insult, incitement, and defamation offenses, and urged authorities to investigate and prosecute if warranted. Copies of the letter were also sent to the Police Commissioner and the Director of Courts.

Simultaneously, opposition leader Yair Lapid issued legal warning letters to Channel 14 figures including Itzhak Mirilashvili, Itamar Fleishman, and Daniel Cohen after being called "Judenrat" and accused of "helping the Nazis" on air. Lapid's lawyers stressed that such Holocaust-related slurs are severe defamation and not protected speech. Lapid, son of Holocaust survivor Tommy Lapid, demanded a filmed public apology within 24 hours, threatening legal action otherwise.

These legal moves highlight escalating tensions between Israeli media personalities and political figures, focusing on the boundaries of free speech and judicial respect. The investigations and potential lawsuits will determine the consequences for Channel 14 and its staff.
