Yaya Pink and Allies Seize Control of Israeli Democratic Party Through Network of NGOs

Investigations have revealed how Yaya Pink, a leading figure in Israel's Democratic Party, and his close associates took control of the party's internal mechanisms by leveraging a complex network of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). These NGOs, which received millions of shekels, including funds from the Histadrut labor federation, were used to employ senior party officials and promote Pink's candidacy in party primaries.

The network originated from a young group connected to Shelly Yachimovich, now dominant within the Democratic Party. This group leads "Hug Talmeem," a faction of party members, headed by Avishai Ben Aharon, a close friend of Pink and a powerful party figure. Ben Aharon also chairs the "Hug Talmeem" and serves on the party's influential executive committee. The network includes family ties and close friendships, such as Pink's connection to Naama Lazimi and Ben Aharon's wife, Laura Telinovsky, who previously worked for Yachimovich and is involved in the "Beit Yigal Alon" NGO, which received Histadrut funds transferred by Pink.

Another NGO, "HaYisraelim," founded by Pink, collected donations including 10 million shekels from U.S. sources to fund various projects. This NGO also employed Shani Granot Lovton, wife of party CEO Omer Lovton, who was Pink's campaign chief during the primaries. Pink also established "Democrat TV," an online media channel run through the "Darkenu" NGO, where Ben Aharon serves as CEO.

This network effectively ensures mutual support: Pink secures employment and funding for his allies within the party, who in turn advance his political career. The use of public funds and foreign donations to strengthen this faction has raised concerns about corruption and unfair advantages in party primaries. A police complaint has been filed, and Knesset member Almog Cohen has called for an urgent State Comptroller investigation.

Other Democratic Party candidates without access to this extensive infrastructure feel marginalized and disadvantaged in the primaries. Despite the party's democratic name, the reality is that Pink and his associates, through their NGO network, control the party's operations and candidate selection processes.
