22-Year-Old Develops Life-Threatening Allergic Reaction After Fishing Exposure

A 22-year-old man from the moshav Kfar Zeitim experienced a severe allergic reaction shortly after exposure to fish, to which he is allergic. United Hatzalah paramedic Yinon Asher Elkayim was first on the scene and administered an epinephrine injection using an EpiPen, stabilizing the young man’s condition. Following treatment, he was transported to a hospital for further care.

Anaphylaxis, the condition the man suffered, is a rapid and potentially fatal allergic reaction that can develop within minutes of allergen exposure. Symptoms include shortness of breath, swelling of the tongue or throat, widespread rash, blood pressure drop, and possible loss of consciousness. Immediate administration of epinephrine is critical, followed by urgent hospital observation even if symptoms improve.

The Israeli Ministry of Health stresses that individuals diagnosed with allergies that may lead to anaphylaxis should always carry two valid EpiPens and use them immediately upon symptom onset. Emergency medical services must be contacted promptly, as reactions can recur even after initial treatment. This case highlights the importance of rapid response and preparedness in managing life-threatening allergic reactions.
