IDF Implements New Policy Reducing Defense Forces in Gaza Border Communities

Security officers in Israeli communities bordering the Gaza Strip are warning of a significant reduction in local defense forces due to a new IDF policy. The policy prevents reservists assigned to local defense units from returning to service after taking leave, training, or falling ill, effectively blocking their re-enlistment through the military system. This has led to a gradual depletion of operational defense manpower in these communities.

In one community attacked by militants on October 7, only 12 members of the local defense unit will remain on duty starting Sunday. Despite having six additional reservists ready to be called up, authorization to reinstate them has been withheld for over ten days. Local leaders describe the situation as a serious abandonment, especially during the foggy season which increases the risk of infiltration. They report that command centers have closed and security gates have been left unmanned.

IDF officials explain that this reduction is part of a broader downsizing of reservist forces and that, until further notice, reservists cannot be mobilized even for local defense duties. The IDF has not yet issued an official response to these concerns but indicated one will be provided when available.
