Turkey Deepens Influence in Gaza Through IHH Despite Israeli Terror Designation

In recent years, Turkey has positioned itself as a hostile state toward Israel and a supporter of Hamas, with its influence increasingly felt in the Gaza Strip. The Turkish organization IHH, designated as a terrorist group by Israel, operates extensively in Gaza, managing aid distribution, building mosques and schools, and even organizing social events such as weddings. Despite its terrorist designation, IHH activities continue unhindered, signaling Turkey's growing foothold in the region.

IHH first gained Israeli attention during the 2010 Gaza flotilla incident and has attempted to send aid ships to Gaza during the current conflict, though these were intercepted by the IDF. In April 2026, footage showed IHH tractors clearing rubble in northern Gaza, prominently displaying Turkish flags, underscoring Turkey's physical presence. Turkish-backed aid efforts also include food distribution and educational support, further embedding Turkish influence.

Turkey's regional ambitions extend beyond Gaza, with proxies in Sudan, Somalia, and Libya, and military involvement in Libya and support for Azerbaijan in its conflict with Armenia. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has openly stated Turkey's intent to counter Israeli actions in Palestine, referencing past interventions in other conflict zones. While no Turkish nationals are reportedly present in Gaza, local Gazan operatives carry out IHH's activities, illustrating a strategic indirect presence.

This growing Turkish involvement in Gaza raises concerns about Ankara's intentions and its role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as it seeks to establish a foothold near Israel's borders through humanitarian and infrastructural projects linked to Hamas.
