Wildfires Rage Across Europe, Prompting Mass Evacuations and Travel Warnings

Europe is currently grappling with severe wildfires fueled by an intense heatwave, primarily affecting Spain and France. In France, this year has seen over 13,500 fires burning more than 1.16 million hectares, surpassing last year's record. Popular tourist areas in southwestern France, including the Cap Ferret peninsula near Arcachon Bay, have been evacuated, with tens of thousands displaced and numerous homes destroyed. Two firefighters died battling the blazes near Bordeaux. The heatwave also forced the Tour de France to shorten a stage by about 30 kilometers due to temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius.

Spain faces a similar crisis, with over 105,000 people ordered to evacuate or shelter in place, mainly around Madrid and the provinces of Ávila, Toledo, and Valencia. Other countries such as Portugal, Italy, parts of the Western Balkans, and Turkey are on high alert for wildfires, though the most significant disruptions currently affect France and Spain.

Greece, a popular summer destination for Israelis, is also at high risk, with nine regions designated as very high fire danger zones, including Rhodes, Thessaloniki, Evia, and Thessaly. Early July saw a major fire northwest of Thessaloniki that caused thousands of evacuations and two fatalities, with additional fires reported later in the month.

In response, the European Union has deployed 777 firefighters from 14 countries to high-risk areas, including Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal, supported by firefighting aircraft and emergency teams. The Meteoalarm platform has issued weather warnings across several European countries. Travelers planning trips to affected regions are advised to monitor wildfire updates, check for travel disruptions, and follow local authorities' instructions regarding evacuations and road closures.
