Massive Wildfires Rage in Spain and Portugal, Threatening Tourist Areas

Following a severe heatwave in Europe last week, massive wildfires have erupted across Spain and Portugal, severely impacting popular tourist regions including Costa Brava. In Spain's Empordà area, over 12,000 residents from ten municipalities have been affected, with some ordered to stay indoors and others evacuated due to a forest fire near La Bisbal d'Empordà that began Saturday morning. Dramatic footage shows towering smoke and flames as firefighting teams battle the blaze.

Portugal is also grappling with widespread fires, particularly around the municipality of Vizela in the Viseu district. The Portuguese Prime Minister, Luis Montenegro, warned that the entire country faces a very high risk of fire. Since Wednesday, fires have spread through forests, causing at least nine injuries, including one civilian with severe burns and three firefighters with minor injuries. Temperatures in Portugal are expected to reach up to 44 degrees Celsius, prompting red alert status in 12 of the 18 districts through the weekend.

Authorities have deployed approximately 1,000 firefighters, supported by 300 vehicles and eight aircraft, to contain the main fires, while additional teams combat smaller blazes. These wildfires follow a recent large fire in southern France that forced the evacuation of 3,000 people. The ongoing heatwave and dry conditions continue to exacerbate the fire risks across Western Europe, threatening both residents and key tourist destinations.
