IDF Chief Emphasizes Importance of Haredi Brigade in Strengthening Israel's Defense

During a visit to Israel's northern border on Wednesday, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir met with commanders and soldiers from the Haredi "Yonatan" battalion, part of the Hachshmonaim Brigade. Zamir highlighted the critical role of the brigade in Israel's security and praised its establishment as a historic milestone. He stressed the need for the IDF to grow and strengthen its ground forces following lessons learned from the October conflict, aiming to build more battalions and brigades capable of decisively defeating enemies and protecting the country.

Zamir commended the Haredi battalion's pioneering role, comparing it to Nachshon ben Aminadav who was the first to jump into the sea, paving the way for the nation. He emphasized the military's commitment to accommodating the Haredi lifestyle during service, calling their integration a national, Jewish, and historic mission vital to Israel's security. Zamir acknowledged the challenges but framed the service as a great mitzvah.

He also addressed the heavy burden on the reserves, meeting with commanders of the 55th Reserve Brigade, noting their extended service over three years. Zamir called for expanding the pool of regular soldiers to balance the service load and ease the strain on reservists.

Concluding, Zamir pointed to a positive trend in Haredi enlistment in combat and support roles and set a goal to replicate the Yonatan battalion model to develop the Hachshmonaim Brigade into a full combat brigade. He expressed pride and confidence in the soldiers' continued progress toward a shared objective.
