Hezbollah Escalates Attacks Amid Netanyahu's US Visit, Challenging Israel's Restraint

During Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the United States, Hezbollah violated the ceasefire by attacking an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) engineering vehicle. This incident marks a significant escalation, as Hezbollah's recent drone activity had been limited to reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. The IDF has classified the attack as a serious breach of the ceasefire and indicated that a response will be necessary.

Military correspondent Sheria Harush explained that Israel faces a dilemma: it must respond to Hezbollah's aggression but is under American pressure to exercise restraint to ensure the success of a new security pilot program in southern Lebanon. This pilot involves the Lebanese army deploying in areas previously held by the IDF to prevent Hezbollah's return, with American forces supporting the initiative. Harush noted that the United States is keen on the pilot's success, especially following the recent warm reception of Lebanon's president at the White House.

Harush also suggested that Hezbollah's escalation might be influenced by Iran, its main backer, as tensions rise over a potential renewed conflict involving Iran. Hezbollah may be attempting to reassert its influence and undermine the pilot program, which threatens its position in southern Lebanon. A large-scale conflict could force the Lebanese army to withdraw, allowing Hezbollah to regain control and effectively end the pilot. The IDF continues operations in areas outside the pilot zone to dismantle terrorist infrastructure, maintaining freedom of action as per agreements with Lebanon.
