US Warns Lebanon of Severe Consequences if Hezbollah Attacks Israel Amid Rising Tensions

As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepares to meet with US President Donald Trump, Washington has issued a stern warning to Lebanon regarding Hezbollah's potential involvement in any future conflict alongside Iran. According to the Lebanese newspaper Nidaa Al-Watan, the US cautioned that any rocket or drone launched from Lebanon toward Israel would provoke a devastating response, described as "hell" for Hezbollah and Lebanon, with consequences extending beyond southern Lebanon and north of the Litani River.

The warning was reportedly conveyed to Lebanon’s government and Hezbollah through Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who confirmed the group’s awareness of the threat. The US message emphasized that Netanyahu is awaiting an opportunity to launch a broad military campaign should Hezbollah intervene in hostilities involving Iran and the US.

This development comes ahead of a planned Israel-Lebanon negotiation scheduled for August 4 in Rome, focusing on implementing a framework agreement concerning southern Lebanon. Central to these talks are pilot zones intended to test Israeli withdrawal and expand Lebanese state control. A key dispute remains over which entity will oversee the pilot zones, with Lebanon favoring UNIFIL peacekeepers, while Israel remains skeptical due to past experiences. The US has expressed reluctance to deploy troops for monitoring in southern Lebanon, considering appointing a third party to lead the oversight mechanism in coordination with US Central Command’s General Joseph Clearfield.

Separately, the Hezbollah-affiliated Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar reported that Lebanon’s president requested Trump to pressure Israel to advance the second phase of the pilot zones program, which would include more villages in southern Lebanon. Trump reportedly agreed to support this in exchange for accelerated efforts to disarm Hezbollah. However, no timeline has been set for this expansion, which depends on security assessments, engineering surveys, and ensuring the safe return of residents.

These developments highlight the fragile security situation in the region and the complex diplomatic efforts underway to manage tensions between Israel, Lebanon, Hezbollah, and the US amid broader US-Iran hostilities.
