IDF Officer Claims Supreme Court Silenced His Testimony on Haredi Recruitment Challenges

Reserve Major Ben Sabo, spokesperson and training commander in the IDF's Hachshmonaim Brigade, recounted to Channel 7 his experience at a Supreme Court hearing on the Detention Law. Although invited to present authentic field data on Haredi recruitment and enlistment challenges, Sabo said he was ultimately denied the opportunity to speak.

Sabo explained that the Hachshmonaim Brigade was established with strong support from various Haredi rabbis, aiming to integrate serious Haredi youth who seek to maintain religious observance alongside military service. He noted a surge in enlistment enthusiasm after the October 7 attacks, but said increased arrests and persecutions have since caused many cancellations and reluctance among recruits. He described a growing tension within society, fueled by groups opposing Haredi enlistment or attempting to create divisions between religious and Haredi communities.

Despite being scheduled to testify, Sabo said the court session was dominated by petitioners opposing the law, with judges appearing to engage with them humorously. When it was his turn, Judge Solberg informed him he would not be given any time to speak. Sabo criticized the court for silencing voices like his, accusing it of suppressing Israeli sovereignty and public discourse. He emphasized that his testimony was officially recorded by the court and that alternative media would ensure the truth is heard.

This incident highlights tensions surrounding the Detention Law debate, the integration of Haredi soldiers, and the broader societal divisions in Israel. The Supreme Court's handling of testimonies in this case has drawn criticism from military representatives advocating for the Haredi community's perspective.
