Gaza Division Intel Officer Appeals to Supreme Court to Block Identity Reveal

A senior intelligence officer, identified as Lt. Col. A., who served as the intelligence officer for the Gaza Division on October 7, is set to appeal to the Supreme Court in a final attempt to prevent the publication of his identity and halt his dismissal from the IDF. The officer, who is still serving in the IDF's intelligence corps, had his request to keep his name confidential until now denied by the Administrative Court. He has until September 24 to file his appeal.

The legal battle began when "Ynet" and "Yedioth Ahronoth" requested the publication of his identity. Initially, the state opposed the release, citing security concerns. However, the state later changed its position, stating there was no longer a security risk, which led the Administrative Court to permit the publication.

Lt. Col. A. was among several senior commanders deemed to bear command responsibility for the October 7 failures by the Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, in November 2023. The officer is contesting his dismissal, arguing it is an unlawful attempt to remove him from service without proper authority. He claims he was surprised by the timing of the decision's publication.

Presiding Judge Kobi Vardi stated that given the state's revised stance, the widespread public knowledge of the officer's role, and the significant public interest in identifying those responsible for the national disaster, publication is warranted. He noted that the event of October 7 is unprecedented and of supreme public importance, and that any security concerns have been significantly diminished by existing online information and public discourse, including statements from the officer's father and readily available information via search engines and AI chatbots.
