Israeli Press Council Honors Four Yedioth Ahronoth and ynet Journalists for October 7 War Coverage
Four journalists from Yedioth Ahronoth and ynet, Ronen Bergman, Ziv Koren, Gil Yohanan, and Ilana Kuriel, received certificates of appreciation from the Israeli Press and Communications Council on Wednesday. The awards recognize their outstanding coverage of the October 7 war and the subsequent months. The recipients were selected based on recommendations from media outlets and Israel Prize laureates in journalism, with the council ensuring broad and balanced representation of journalistic work. The council emphasized that the honors do not diminish the appreciation for all media professionals working tirelessly since October 7, but specifically acknowledge exceptional work, courage, and professional dedication during Operation Iron Swords.
The ceremony took place at Beit Ariela in Tel Aviv, hosted by Tali Lipkin-Shahak and accompanied by musical performances from Ben and Talia Danzig, relatives of the late hostage Alex Danzig from Kibbutz Nir Oz, who was killed in Hamas captivity. Judges praised Dr. Ronen Bergman for his unprecedented international investigative reports on intelligence communities and war strategies, exposing intelligence failures leading to October 7 and behind-the-scenes war management and hostage negotiations, setting a high standard for investigative journalism.
Ilana Kuriel was recognized for her sensitive and human coverage of the western Negev and Gaza envelope communities during their most difficult times, giving voice to southern residents and chronicling the tragedy, heroism, and recovery of these communities alongside significant environmental reporting. Photographer Ziv Koren was commended for his uncompromising, intimate documentation of the war front and home front since the outbreak, capturing destroyed communities, military operations in Gaza, and the struggle of hostage families and rehabilitation units with courage and exceptional visual talent.
Gil Yohanan received honors for his outstanding, courageous, and dedicated war coverage often under life-threatening conditions in conflict zones, embodying the duty to present reality as it is and serving as a pillar for the public’s right to know. In addition to these four, dozens of other Israeli journalists, including Yonit Levi, Dana Weiss, Danny Kushmaro, Lucy Aharish, Or Heller, Almog Boker, Amir Ivgi, and Carmela Menashe, were also recognized.
Professor Hanan Melcer, President of the Israeli Press and Communications Council and former Deputy President of the Supreme Court, addressed the ceremony, highlighting the critical role of free media since October 7 in safeguarding Israel’s freedom and resilience alongside security forces. He praised journalists for their commitment and risk-taking to present the truth and pledged continued defense of press freedom in Israel while supporting their vital work.
