WhatsApp Rolls Out View Count Feature for Channel Messages to Admins
WhatsApp has started introducing a new metric for channel administrators that shows how many people have viewed each update posted. This view count appears directly within the message bubble in the channel, providing admins with a more accurate picture of actual exposure beyond follower numbers or shares. The feature is currently available to some users of the latest WhatsApp beta versions on Android and iPhone. A limited number of regular users may also see it, but the rollout is gradual and not all channel admins will receive it immediately.
When an admin posts an image, video, text, or link in a channel, WhatsApp updates the view count as more users open the update. This data is accessible only to channel admins; followers cannot see the view counts at this stage. Previously, admins relied mainly on the number of comments and shares to gauge an update's success. The new view count metric allows identification of widely viewed content that may not have received many reactions and enables comparison between different types of posts.
The feature has been in development for over a year, but the current news is its initial distribution to beta testers. WhatsApp has not officially announced it on its channels nor provided a timeline for full availability to all channel admins. Concurrently, WhatsApp is developing another version where view counts will also be visible to followers, similar to other content platforms. This option is still in development and not yet available for testing.
Channel admins who do not see the view count do not need to take any special action beyond updating their app to the latest version. Activation occurs server-side and is expected to expand to more accounts in the coming weeks, though no official schedule for full rollout exists yet.
