Haredi Faction Demands Shas Include Their Representative on Party List

The Haredi faction known as "HaTzibur HaCharedi" is escalating its political representation campaign by demanding that Shas include Rabbi Eliyahu Kalifa on its Knesset candidate list. This move follows a similar demand made to the United Torah Judaism party and reflects concerns that thousands of Haredi families, especially within the Sephardic community, lack adequate political representation.

Moti Leitner, chairman of the faction, emphasized that Rabbi Kalifa, an experienced educator and community leader, would provide responsible representation for both Ashkenazi and Sephardic Haredim. Rabbi Kalifa, 43, a resident of Givat Ze'ev and father of five, stated his motivation stems from grassroots realities, highlighting the struggles of children waiting for school placements and daughters awaiting seminary acceptance due to their family names. He stressed the importance of ensuring that every child is seen, heard, and supported, underscoring the priority of Jewish education.

This development signals a growing push within the Haredi community to diversify and strengthen their political voice ahead of upcoming elections. The faction's appeal to Shas, a major Sephardic Haredi party led by Aryeh Deri, aims to address perceived gaps in representation and influence within the established Haredi political leadership.
