Israel Counters Iran’s Advanced Sejjil Hypersonic Missile Threat with Multi-Layer Defense
Iran has unveiled the Sejjil, one of the most advanced and fastest ballistic missiles in its arsenal, powered by solid fuel and capable of reaching Israel within approximately seven minutes. This missile represents a significant technological leap, as its solid-fuel propulsion allows for rapid launch readiness from underground missile cities, unlike liquid-fueled missiles that require hours of preparation and are vulnerable to preemptive strikes. The Sejjil missile has an operational range of 2,000 to 2,500 kilometers, easily covering all of Israel, and can reach hypersonic speeds of Mach 8 to 10. It carries a heavy warhead weighing up to one ton and, in its advanced Sejjil-2 version, features guidance fins that enable exceptional accuracy within tens of meters and maneuverability at high altitudes, earning it the nickname "the dancing missile." Iran often launches the Sejjil alongside drones and other missiles like the Khaybar Shikan to overwhelm Israeli air defenses.
In response to this heightened threat, Israel maintains a sophisticated multi-layered missile defense system developed over decades. The Arrow 3 system forms the primary defense layer, designed to intercept long-range ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere in space, preventing secondary damage. Arrow 2 provides an additional layer by intercepting missiles within the atmosphere at high altitudes. Israel also employs advanced radar networks, including the "Green Pine" and "Super Green Pine" radars, integrated with American satellites for immediate launch detection and precise early warning.
Despite the unprecedented speed and capabilities of the Sejjil missile, Israel’s defense infrastructure has repeatedly demonstrated effective and precise interception capabilities against advanced threats in the region.
