Israel Appoints Vivian Eisen as New Ambassador to Colombia to Restore Diplomatic Ties

The Israeli government has approved the appointment of Vivian Eisen as Israel's new ambassador to Colombia, marking a significant step in restoring diplomatic relations between the two countries after a two-year hiatus. This decision follows an agreement between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar and Colombia's newly elected president, Gustavo Petro, to fully renew diplomatic ties on August 7, the day Colombia will open its embassy in Jerusalem.

The diplomatic break began in 2024, initiated by Colombia's then-president in response to the conflict in Gaza, leading to the absence of ambassadors in both Bogotá and Jerusalem since June 2024. Eisen's appointment signals the end of this diplomatic crisis and a return to full official representation. The renewal was agreed upon after Sa'ar's discussions with Colombia's president-elect and the designated foreign minister, Omar Bolaños Escobar.

Currently serving as Israel's ambassador to North Macedonia, Vivian Eisen has extensive diplomatic experience, including previous postings in London, Brussels, and Chile, as well as managing the Central America department at Israel's Foreign Ministry. Additionally, the government unanimously approved the appointment of Nissan Amdur as ambassador to Croatia, who will also serve concurrently as ambassador to North Macedonia.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry, under Sa'ar's guidance, is finalizing preparations to resume full diplomatic activities with Colombia, aiming to strengthen Israel's relations with Latin American countries. The restoration of ties includes immediate ambassadorial appointments and the opening of Colombia's embassy in Jerusalem, reflecting a broader strategy to deepen bilateral cooperation.
