Yesh Atid Lawmaker Ron Katz Resigns From Knesset and Politics Amid Party Exodus

Ron Katz, a member of the Yesh Atid party, submitted his resignation from the Knesset on Sunday morning to Speaker Amir Ohana, announcing he will not run in the upcoming elections. Katz's departure adds to a wave of resignations within Yesh Atid, following similar announcements by MKs Boaz Toporovsky, Yaron Levy, and Idan Roll. Additionally, MK Elazar Stern is expected to leave Yesh Atid to run with the new party "Yashar!" led by Gadi Eizenkot.

The exodus is widely attributed to Yesh Atid's declining poll numbers, with the party currently holding 24 seats but recent surveys suggesting it might not surpass the 15-seat threshold if elections were held now. This has created intense competition for realistic Knesset spots, prompting several sitting MKs to announce their political exit in advance.

In his resignation letter, Katz reflected on his 15 years of public service, calling it a significant mission and expressing gratitude to party leader and former Prime Minister Yair Lapid, colleagues, staff, and activists. Katz emphasized the timing of his resignation, stating he did not want to continue receiving a public salary after deciding to pursue a new path. He also called for national unity, quoting Psalms to highlight the value of brotherhood despite differing opinions.

Yesh Atid praised Katz for his dedicated and professional service, especially as a veteran grassroots activist. Lapid also commended Katz, calling him a longtime friend and pillar of the party's grassroots network. Katz's Knesset seat is expected to be filled by Mohammed Shoko Abu Elhija, head of Yesh Atid's Arab sector and an educator from Tamra, who will become the first Arab MK in the party.
