Veteran Fighters in Their 50s Form New Israeli Defense Battalion in Hebron Area

Lieutenant Colonel (res.) A, commander of Battalion 8554, recently concluded the unit's first operational deployment in the Hebron and Mount Hebron area, marking a significant milestone for this unique Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) battalion. The battalion is distinct within the IDF reserves due to its older average age of 49, led by Lt. Col. A himself, aged 63, who returned to active command to establish and lead the new framework.

The battalion's operational debut involved various defense and security missions across the sector, including securing key routes and assisting in the establishment of a military outpost at a newly founded settlement. Lt. Col. A described the deployment as challenging but successful, with positive feedback from all involved.

The idea to form Battalion 8554 originated about a year ago when Lt. Col. A was approached by a former sergeant to help create a unit that would ease the operational burden on younger reservists, who have been continuously deployed since the October 7 events. The battalion was also designed to provide a skilled defensive force dedicated to protecting civilians and to foster a social framework uniting diverse segments of Israeli society. The unit includes members from various communities, including Haredim, Bedouins, and Druze, demonstrating effective cooperation despite differing backgrounds and firmly held views.

With the first deployment completed and the sector handed over to a replacement battalion, the leadership of Battalion 8554 expresses full readiness to continue defensive missions as required. Lt. Col. A emphasized their commitment to serve all of Israel with willingness and extensive experience, looking ahead to future assignments.
