Israeli Yeshiva Student Israel Yehuda Fein Released From Military Prison Amidst Large Hasidic Celebration

Israel Yehuda Fein, a student at the Shafat Emet Yeshiva in Jerusalem and member of the Gur Hasidic community, was released from military prison on the night following Tisha B'Av after serving a 20-day sentence. Fein had been detained after arriving at the military recruitment office in Jerusalem to arrange a medical exemption but was redirected to Haifa, where he was classified as a draft dodger and sentenced without consideration of his medical and personal circumstances.

His arrest sparked significant outrage within the ultra-Orthodox community, leading to unprecedented protests led by the Gur Rebbe himself. Tens of thousands of followers gathered outside Prison 10, holding prayer vigils and reciting Psalms in support of Fein and other Torah scholars facing conscription pressures.

Upon Fein's release, a large welcoming event took place at his yeshiva, attended by fellow students, family, and friends. The celebration featured spirited dancing and singing of traditional songs honoring Torah study. The head of the yeshiva, Rabbi David Alter, son of the Gur Rebbe, participated in the festivities, which continued in a procession to Fein's family home in Minchat Yitzhak, drawing thousands of supporters.

Throughout Fein's incarceration, community activists and "father of prisoners" Rabbi Shimon Shisha worked to secure his release. Fein has now returned to his studies, marking the end of a highly publicized episode that highlighted tensions between the Israeli military and the ultra-Orthodox community over conscription policies.
