Former Chief Rabbi David Lau Urges Ban on Road Blockades to End Social Division
In a special interview ahead of Tisha B'Av, former Chief Rabbi David Lau called on Israeli lawmakers from across the political spectrum to enact a law banning road blockades as a form of protest. Speaking on the "Sheva" program, Rabbi Lau emphasized that the first legislative proposal submitted after the upcoming elections should prohibit blocking major transportation routes, which he described as an intolerable disruption to daily life.
Rabbi Lau clarified that he supports the right to protest but insists demonstrations be conducted respectfully and in appropriate locations. He recounted a personal experience from three and a half years ago when a road blockade extended a 30-minute drive from Modi'in to Tel Aviv to over two hours, while he was transporting an ill woman.
Beyond the issue of road blockades, Rabbi Lau expressed deep concern over the escalating verbal hostility and physical violence fracturing Israeli society. He urged citizens and leaders alike to reconsider their words and actions, stressing the importance of dialogue and unity. Quoting a lesson from his childhood, he warned that "a blow passes, a word remains," highlighting the lasting damage of hateful speech.
Rabbi Lau concluded by appealing for responsible communication that fosters national benefit and social cohesion rather than inflaming tensions.
