Rabbi Shaul Alter Condemns Roadblocks, Urges Personal Spiritual Focus Over Protests
Rabbi Shaul Alter, head of the Pnei Menachem yeshiva, delivered a strong and unexpected message against the recent wave of protests and roadblocks across Israel. Speaking at a tefillin laying ceremony at his yeshiva, he criticized the demonstrations sparked by the intensified struggle over the arrest of ultra-Orthodox draft dodgers. Citing a biblical verse from the weekly Torah portion, "In zeal I am zealous for Him within them," Rabbi Alter interpreted it to mean that zealotry should be internal and personal rather than expressed through public protests that inconvenience others.
He emphasized that individuals should focus on self-improvement and spiritual growth instead of engaging in disruptive demonstrations. This public stance is notable for its rarity and distinctiveness within the ultra-Orthodox community, which often adopts a more militant approach toward the issue of yeshiva students’ arrests. Supporters of Rabbi Alter note that his position aligns with that of Rabbi Dov Landau, a leading Lithuanian community figure and his mentor, who recently spoke out against violent protests and disruptions to public order.
Rabbi Alter’s remarks mark a significant voice calling for restraint and introspection amid ongoing tensions surrounding the conscription of ultra-Orthodox men, reflecting a push within some community leaders for a less confrontational approach.
