Gadi Eizenkot Lacks Shin Bet Security Despite Leading Role in Israeli Elections

Gadi Eizenkot, chairman of the Yisrael party and a leading contender against Benjamin Netanyahu for prime minister, is not receiving personal security protection from the Shin Bet, Israel's internal security service. Although Eizenkot may be tasked with forming the next government, he is not officially protected by the Shin Bet because he does not hold a formal governmental position. Due to this, his campaign has arranged for private security at large events and during field visits to mitigate risks amid rising threats and increased public exposure.

This decision contrasts with other prominent political figures such as Naftali Bennett, former prime minister and leader of the Yachdav party, who continues to receive Shin Bet protection. Additionally, Shin Bet chief David Zini has supported lifetime security for Sara Netanyahu, wife of the current prime minister, and extended protection for their children years after Netanyahu's term ended.

The Shin Bet clarified that their mandate covers only those individuals designated by law, and Eizenkot does not fall under this category. The move to provide private security reflects concerns over the growing size of Eizenkot's events, his leading position in polls, and the active campaign against him. This issue was highlighted last month when the lack of official protection for Eizenkot was publicly noted.
