Former Technion Rabbi Offers Reconciliation Meeting Amid Controversy Over Rabbi Lando's Remarks

Rabbi Eliyahu Rahamim Zini, former Technion rabbi and head of the Or VeYeshua community and yeshiva in Haifa, addressed the recent controversy surrounding Rabbi Dov Lando's statements, which were perceived as critical of the religious Zionist sector. Rabbi Zini criticized the environment around Rabbi Lando, claiming they influence him to make statements he might not have made otherwise and present him with a distorted reality. Despite his criticism, Rabbi Zini emphasized the importance of respecting a venerable Torah scholar and called for giving Rabbi Lando the benefit of the doubt.

Rabbi Zini expressed his willingness to meet privately with Rabbi Lando to foster reconciliation and repair the damage caused by the storm of reactions to the latter's remarks. He insisted that such a meeting should exclude Rabbi Lando's current entourage, whom he blamed for misleading the rabbi. Rabbi Zini also highlighted the significance of honoring elderly Torah scholars, even when they err, citing Jewish tradition and stressing this duty especially on the eve of Tisha B'Av.

The controversy erupted after Rabbi Lando's comments were interpreted as opposing the religious Zionist community, prompting a sharp response from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who urged against generalizing about the entire sector. Rabbi Lando later issued a clarification stating he did not intend to criticize all members of religious Zionism. Rabbi Zini's statements preceded this clarification and came amid a broader call for unity and healing during a period of national mourning.
