Shas Magazine Criticizes Religious Zionist Community as Manipulated in Conflict with Ultra-Orthodox

The Shas-affiliated magazine HaDerech published a sharp editorial accusing parts of the Religious Zionist community of being manipulated in a political struggle against the ultra-Orthodox public. In an article by editor Ahia Beitan titled "My Dear Brothers, Someone Is Using You," the magazine claims Religious Zionist leaders are being used like puppets by forces seeking to undermine the ultra-Orthodox sector.

The editorial argues that some Religious Zionist figures believe they represent a moderate Judaism, but this approach fails because it disparages Torah scholars and alienates traditional Jews. It warns that insulting ultra-Orthodox leaders will not bring people closer to tradition. The article also criticizes the media and opposition parties for embracing Religious Zionist voices only when they criticize the ultra-Orthodox, inviting them to conferences and encouraging attacks on the ultra-Orthodox draft law.

The piece further claims that once the conflict with the ultra-Orthodox ends, these same forces will turn their criticism against the Religious Zionist community itself, suggesting that those wearing knitted kippot will become the next targets of hatred. This editorial reflects ongoing tensions within Israel's religious public and political landscape.
