Apple Plans Variable Aperture Camera for iPhone 18 Pro Models to Enhance Photography

Apple is set to upgrade the camera system in its upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models, according to a report from MacRumors. The new models will feature a variable aperture lens for the first time, allowing physical control over the amount of light entering the camera. Unlike current iPhone cameras that use a fixed aperture and rely mainly on software processing to adjust exposure, this new mechanism will open and close the aperture based on lighting conditions, similar to the human eye's pupil.

This upgrade is expected to significantly improve outdoor video recording by reducing light without increasing shutter speed, resulting in smoother and more natural motion in videos. For still photography, especially portraits, the variable aperture could enhance depth of field and background blur, producing more natural-looking images with less dependence on digital processing. It remains unclear whether users will have manual control over the aperture or if it will be managed automatically by the system. The iPhone 18 series is anticipated to be unveiled in September.
