Israeli Youth Swimming Championship Sees 14 Age Group Records Broken

The Israeli Youth Swimming Championship concluded on Tuesday after five days of competition featuring nearly 900 swimmers, making it one of the largest youth swimming events in the country. During the championship, 14 new age group records were set, including four individual records and ten in relay events. Notable individual record breakers included Adi Maoz (Maccabi Rishon LeZion) who set a national record for 13-year-olds in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:07.15, Omer Shani (Maccabi Rehovot) who broke the 14-year-old record in the 50m breaststroke, Michal Oginz (Hapoel Beit Shemesh) who set a 14-year-old record in the 100m freestyle, and Dor Weiss (TLV Swim) who established a 15-year-old record in the 1500m freestyle with 15:48.19.

Relay events were particularly successful, with ten age group records broken, mostly in mixed relays. AS Ramat Hasharon stood out with five relay records across various age groups and events, including the 4x200m freestyle and 4x100m medley relays. Other clubs such as Maccabi Rehovot, Maccabi Kiryat Bialik, Maccabi Rishon LeZion, and Maccabi Ramat Gan also set relay records. The abundance of relay records highlights the strong team efforts and quality depth in Israeli youth swimming clubs.

Maccabi Rishon LeZion topped the overall points table with 4,264 points, followed by Maccabi Ramat Gan with 3,686 points and Maccabi Haifa with 3,446 points. The championship saw a 5% increase in participants compared to last year, with a notable rise in younger age groups and a high female participation rate of nearly 45%, indicating a broad base of talent among girls.

Michal Oginz led the individual rankings with 28 points, winning multiple freestyle events against older competitors. Other standout female swimmers included Elizaveta Prolov (MS Ramla), who won all three breaststroke distances, and Maayan Graur (Maccabi Haifa), who won two individual medley events. Among the boys, Mark Teller (Maccabi Ramat Gan) dominated the breaststroke sprints, and Rom Keinan (Hod Hasharon) excelled in distance freestyle events.

Several top performers recently competed at the European Youth Championships in Munich, including Ofir Simcha, Shon Vornokov, and Mark Teller, who reached two finals in breaststroke events. Their international experience was evident in their performances, contrasting with emerging local talents like Oginz, who is expected to compete internationally in the coming years.
