Israeli Minister Shikli Confirms Israel Saved Erdogan’s Life, Calls Turkey Ungrateful and Warns of Possible War

Israeli Minister of Diaspora Affairs Amichai Shikli publicly confirmed for the first time that Israel saved Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s life years ago by sending medical aid to treat his cancer. Despite this, Shikli harshly criticized Erdogan and Turkey’s conduct, calling it "ungrateful" following Turkey’s hostile rhetoric and actions against Israel, including during the recent devastating earthquake when Israel sent a large rescue delegation to Turkey.

Speaking at a closed conference hosted by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (JCAP) on July 22, 2026, Shikli described Erdogan as a "combination of Hitler and Sinwar," referencing Erdogan’s imperialistic ambitions and alleged ethnic cleansing intentions in the region. He urged Israel to prepare for a potential military conflict with Turkey, warning that direct clashes with the Turkish military, including at sea, could happen imminently.

The JCAP research launched at the event detailed Turkey’s expanding influence in Jerusalem and the broader Middle East, highlighting Ankara’s support for Hamas, military presence in Syria, and political activities aimed at undermining Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem. The study emphasized Turkey’s use of cultural institutions, NGOs, scholarships, and economic aid to deepen its foothold in the city.

Shikli called for the immediate closure of the Turkish consulate in Jerusalem, accusing it of facilitating anti-Israel activities and supporting Islamist groups. JCAP chairman Haim Silverstein stated the consulate should only reopen if Erdogan recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Shikli also criticized NATO and the UN for trusting Turkey and Erdogan, labeling it a serious mistake.

Tensions between Israel and Turkey have escalated recently, with Turkish officials intensifying hostile rhetoric and several near-military maritime incidents. Earlier in July, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called Israel "an unbearable burden on humanity," and Erdogan labeled Israel "a gang of Zionist murderers."
