Israeli Government Struggles to Deliver Critical Information to Ultra-Orthodox Community for Decades

For decades, vital government information has failed to reach Israel's ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) community. This includes essential notices about civil rights, employment programs, safety guidelines, and preventive healthcare. The information often stops short of its intended audience, leaving many Haredi citizens uninformed not due to unwillingness but because of language and accessibility barriers.

The issue is more than economic or media-related; it can be a matter of life and death. Government campaigns have historically been broad and generic, neglecting the unique language, values, and communication channels of the Haredi sector. This disconnect has created a tangible gap in awareness and access to services.

Health communication exemplifies the problem. Medical professionals and emergency responders report numerous cases of dehydration and medical complications during fasting days, many of which could be prevented with timely, culturally appropriate guidance. Tailored health advisories in the community’s language and through trusted media channels could reduce hospitalizations and ease healthcare system burdens.

Effective communication requires more than literal translations or isolated posters. It demands a professional approach that uses natural information channels, communicates in relatable terms, and treats the Haredi public as an equal audience deserving high-quality information. Roi Asaf, head of the Haredi Authority at the Prime Minister’s Office, emphasized that coercive attempts to change the community are undemocratic and counterproductive. Instead, he advocates for a comprehensive five-year plan to implement tailored outreach.

While full accessibility to government information across ministries is still a work in progress, the shift toward customized communication is already showing positive results. When information is delivered in the right language, at the right time, and through appropriate channels, it transforms from mere words into real, impactful change within the Haredi community.
