Violent Clashes and Harassment Continue at Springs Near Jerusalem Amid Public Space Disputes

In recent weeks, visitors to the natural springs around Jerusalem have faced aggressive attempts by a small group of men to exclude others from these public spaces. Incidents include public nudity, verbal abuse, threats, and even physical violence. One notable case involved a man attacked after confronting men bathing nude at Ein Hanania, suffering a torn eardrum and threats to his life. The Nature and Parks Authority filed a police complaint following this event.

Residents report that these men often claim the springs as their private domain, demanding others, especially women and families, to leave. Despite the public nature of the sites, enforcement is lacking, allowing such behavior to persist. Some visitors try to negotiate bathing times to avoid conflict, but tensions remain high.

A recent incident at Ein Itamar saw a woman filmed being pressured by men to vacate the spring, with the men taunting her about bathing nude alongside them. She refused to leave, emphasizing the public status of the area and her right to be there. The video sparked widespread online debate.

Other springs, such as Lifta and Ein Saba, also experience similar issues, including littering and dominance by groups of young men. Women warn against visiting alone due to safety concerns. Attempts to legislate gender-segregated bathing times, such as a 2023 bill proposing 15% of bathing hours be gender-separated, have failed.

The Nature and Parks Authority condemned the violence and pledged to increase efforts to maintain public order and safety. Local residents express frustration over the authorities' inability to control the situation, highlighting a long-standing struggle over access to these natural resources near Jerusalem.
